‘...and people

who’s got a soul as you say

can’t say I love you

if I would fulfil all the curses...’

“Ukrainian Decameroune” is a bright  den world where joy and pain, laughter and tears, life and death – everything is bound together existing on a verge of different being of that mysticaly mysterious and unknowable Ukraine which is so close and at the same time is so far from us. This is also the life of Ukrainian village with its original songs, humour and vodka and world where nobody would be surprised at conversation with Death in a simple “neighbouring” way, sitting on a porch and no one would wonder at dance of risen dead man, procession of devils or cock-man.

Death - a tired lonely “woman” with her daughters Plague and Cholera who are filled with compassion for people they have to kill makes the world of “the beyond” more accessible and easily understood, as well as the whole atmosphere of the play, actually, in a magic and at the same time in a very natural way brings your consciousness nearer to a world of beyound the bounds where you suddenly start to live and watch the mysterious images.

“Ukrainian Decameroune” is also a tragedy. A tragedy of whole people’s life and a desperate cry from heart to God.

“...who would know what is sin

  what is death...

  ...who can say what is

  against god

  what is for god

or maybe god is for death

  or death is for god...”
